For weeks now, the naval medical officer Dr. Karen Stendal no longer received any news from her great love Gregor Simonis, with whom she was having a secret affair. The captain of the stately sail training ship Albatros crosses the Atlantic on his way to Lisbon. When Gregor's on-board doctor falls ill, Karen seizes the opportunity and can be assigned to the Albatros as the doctor's deputy. Contrary to expectations, Gregor gives his beloved a cool reception. Also in the coming days and weeks Gregor remains strangely reserved. The captain keeps pointing out that he is a married man and that he also has to act as a role model for the team. But Karen senses that these reasons are trumped up. After all, Gregor's marriage has only existed on paper for quite some time. The unsympathetic corporal Brengel courts all the more intensely for the favor of the attractive ship's doctor. During a two-day shore leave in Lisbon, the officer cadet, who is used to success, presses Karen so hard that she can only save herself with a white lie: Karen pretends to have an appointment with the journalist Thomas Sand, who has come on board the Albatros to do a report on Writing Women in the Navy. In the process, she gets to know him better, and the unplanned encounter develops into an intense affair. But as the Albatross continues its journey, Karen finally learns the real reason for Gregor's dismissive behavior. He suffers from an inoperable brain tumor and has only a short time to live. Karen is now standing between two men. But she knows that Gregor needs her more urgently in this difficult situation.
