Where'd You Go, Bernadette Reviews
As troublesome and overstuffed as Blanchett's performance might be, it's also one of the few interesting things going on in this troublesome and overstuffed misfire of a book adaptation. The Arctic journey at least allows for some splendid-looking scenery, but otherwise "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" is baffling in its lack of coherence and direction. RogerEbert.com Monica Castillo
Linklater can't seem to strike the right tone for Bernadette's story. ReelViews James Berardinelli
Although Where'd You Go, Bernadette suffers from an ungainly structure and uneven pacing, the production as a whole is engaging and uplifting. This is disappointingly one-dimensional work from one of the world's most talented and versatile directors, with all the depth of Charlene's "I've Never Been to Me." AARP Movies for Grownups Thelma Adams
Bernadette is a vibrant creative spirit, and Blanchett blithely gives the character her all. There's a story buried in here about a woman with a seemingly happy life who's nonetheless lost her sense of self, but it feels too pasted together from disparate parts to not leave the audience just scratching their heads by the end. Filmspotting Adam Kempenaar
Linklater understands that it's not where you ended up but what brought you there - and what you do when you get there - that really matters. [I]n a cinematic landscape where stories of women finding themselves are too few and far between, Where'd You Go, Bernadette is a welcome gift, even if it's an imperfect one. Basically a miscalculation from end to end, full of bizarre narrative turns and inexplicable craft decisions. Yet there's never any question that Linklater is fully committed, and it's hard to consider a movie "bad" that's made with this much care. As Bernadette, Cate Blanchett is forced to do the work that Linklater doesn't devote to developing the story or characters. The New Republic Jo Livingstone
The script is an insult to the principle of adaptation: All that is good in the plot has been excised in favor of the shortest route to a happy ending. Where'd You Go, Bernadette feels like it could have been a great film; the final result is not that, but it's at least a distinctive mess. New York Magazine/Vulture David Edelstein
[Linklater] can't find a suitable form for Maria Semple's patchwork best seller... Because Linklater never truly risks alienating his audience, the story's central mechanism of Bernadette as an intractable outsider rings hollow. Notably, this is the first Linklater movie to feature a solo female lead, and Bernadette instantly emerges as one of the most vibrant and complex characters in the director's filmography. Film Comment Magazine Michael Koresky
"Where'd You Go, Bernadette" is about love, but for an American film, it's something even rarer-a film about the rekindling of a woman's brilliant career. "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" has to be seen, and demands to be believed, because of Cate Blanchett. leonardmaltin.com Leonard Maltin
Semple's novel is told in epistolary fashion, so perhaps it was never meant to be a movie. A good many talented people tried to make this adaptation work, but sad to say, it falls short of the mark. Like its main characteris hard to embrace. Richard Linklater's adaptation of Maria Semple's novel is a critical (if characteristically humane) assessment of American society in spiritual crisis.
